Welcome to the Marcham Society website
The Marcham Society was founded in 1994 to encourage community interest in the archaeology, history, natural history and environment of the village and the local area. The ammonite, Perisphinctus pickeringius, symbol of the Marcham Society, is a local geological reference. The original named specimen was found in Marcham. The local Corallian limestone also referred to as 'Coral Rag' contains many such fossils.
The Society publishes pamphlets and booklets, particularly the series named "Coral Rag" which contains articles written on a variety of topics of local interest. ( Please see the link to: Publications )
All of our events are convivial and our aim is to share our enthusiasms and interests in a friendly way. We arrange evening meetings with talks by members or guest speakers on the fourth Monday of the month. These are held along with chat and refreshments in the Main Hall of Marcham Centre.
Monthly, on a Wednesday evening, a group of enthusiastic astronomers meet in the Small Hall. There are also monthly walks usually on a Thursday as well as organised group visits to local places of interest.
In association with established Archaeological groups and Oxford University, members have been involved in digs, test pits and post-excavation work. We are linked to national and local History Societies – this allows our members access to newsletters and events further afield in Oxfordshire and Berkshire.
For those interested in doing their own research into local history, the Society has extensive archives and enthusiastic archivists to help.
